Your Spring Car Maintenance Checklist (After an Illinois Winter) 

Illinois winters are tough on cars. Between road salt, potholes, and wild temperature swings, your Honda works overtime just to get you to work and back. As spring shows up in Central Illinois, this quick checklist helps you shake off winter wear and get ready for smoother driving. 

1) Rinse off winter salt (yes, it still matters) 

Salt doesn’t just look gross—it can speed up corrosion on metal parts under your vehicle.

• Get a thorough wash with an undercarriage rinse
• Don’t forget wheel wells and behind the wheels
• If you park outside, consider a wash after big late-winter storms too

2) Check your tires for pothole season 

Freeze/thaw cycles and potholes can knock things out of spec fast.

• Look for uneven tread wear (inside or outside edges)
• Watch for vibration at highway speeds (could be balance or alignment)
• Check tire pressure weekly as temps change (pressure swings are normal)

Quick tip: If your steering wheel feels off-center or the car pulls left/right, it’s worth getting the alignment checked.

3) Replace wiper blades (and top off washer fluid) 

If your wipers were chattering all winter, spring rain will make it obvious.

• Replace blades if they streak, skip, or squeak
• Use washer fluid rated for changing temps (and keep it topped off)

4) Test your battery before it tests you 

Cold weather is hard on batteries, and spring is when “it was fine yesterday” failures pop up.

• Slow starts are a warning sign
• If your battery is older, a quick test can save you a surprise no-start

5) Listen for brake noise (and feel for changes) 

Winter grime can accelerate brake wear.

• Squealing or grinding = don’t wait
• A soft pedal, shaking, or pulling while braking = get it checked

6) Check your cabin air filter (your nose will thank you) 

If airflow feels weak or you’re noticing odors, your cabin air filter may be overdue.

• Helps with dust, pollen, and spring allergens
• Often one of the easiest “small fixes” that makes a big difference

7) Fluids and quick visual checks 

A few fast checks can prevent bigger issues later.

• Engine oil level and condition
• Coolant level
• Any visible leaks where you park
• Hoses and belts (cracks, fraying, or glazing)

8) Book a spring inspection if anything feels “off” 

If winter left you with a new rattle, a pull in the steering, or a vibration you didn’t have before, spring is the perfect time to get it diagnosed—before road trip season.
